A Resounding Success: The Inaugural WAMSFAT Sports Camp 2025 Ignites the Future of Nigerian Sports
The dream became a reality. From the 10th to the 16th of August, 2025, the serene and world-class Agrotterra Sports Academy in Joga Orile, Ogun State, transformed into a bustling hub of athletic potential, youthful energy, and legendary inspiration. The inaugural WAMSFAT Sports Camp, a visionary initiative organized by the Nigeria School Sport Federation (NSSF) in partnership with the Wamufat Youth Community Development Foundation (WYCDF), concluded not just as an event, but as a transformative movement.
This seven-day intensive camp brought together over 600 students and 150 games masters from all six Southwestern states of Nigeria – Lagos, Ogun, Oyo, Osun, Ondo, and Ekiti. It was a profound investment in grassroots sports development, perfectly aligning with WYCDF’s mission to use sports as a tool for positive change and character building.
The camp was built on a foundation of clear, impactful objectives:
To provide foundational training in six key sports: Athletics, Football, Basketball, Golf, Table Tennis, and Tennis.
To identify and nurture raw talent from the grassroots level.
To promote healthy lifestyles and physical development among school-age children.
To instill essential values like discipline, leadership, and teamwork through sports.
To empower Physical Education teachers and coaches with modern techniques.
Beyond the physical training, the camp was a holistic experience. Each day was structured around a core value—Respect, Teamwork, Resilience, Integrity, Leadership, and Accountability—which was woven into every activity, from morning warm-ups to evening reflection sessions called “VIBES.”
A defining feature of this camp was the unparalleled access participants had to Nigerian sports icons. These legends, who have carried the nation’s flag on the world stage, returned to give back generously:
Segun Odegbami (Mathematical) – 1980 AFCON Winner
Mary Onyali-Omagbemi – 5-Time Olympian & Olympic Medalist
Falilat Ogunkoya – Olympic Medalist & African Record Holder
Mutiu Adepoju (Headmaster) – Former Super Eagles Midfielder
Felix Owolabi – Former Green Eagles Winger & Doctor of Physical Education
Tajudeen Disu – Former Abiola Babes Star
Their presence was not merely ceremonial. They conducted clinics, shared personal stories of triumph and resilience, and served as living proof that excellence in sports and education can go hand-in-hand. As Chief Odegbami noted, “Bringing in ex-internationals as role models will inspire these kids to become the best versions of themselves.”
The success of the camp is best measured by the impact on its participants.
Mrs. Olabisi Joseph, President of NSSF, captured the spirit: “I’m thrilled by the turnout and the enthusiasm of the students… It was a unique opportunity for former athletes to inspire future champions. The camp fostered unity and learning, with no segregation.”
Alhaja Fatimoh Mohammed, Founder of WYCDF, reaffirmed her foundation’s commitment: “This is not just about games or physical fitness — it’s about building confidence, character, and community,” promising that the next edition would be “even bigger and better.”
Most importantly, the young athletes were inspired. 11-year-old Praise Haruna, MVP in Basketball, said the experience has inspired her to aim high in sports. 17-year-old Adesewa Akinpelu found the camp both “educational and fun.”
This historic event would not have been possible without the unwavering support of our key stakeholders: the NSSF for overall coordination, Agrotterra Sports Academy for being gracious hosts and providing top-notch facilities, and all the coaches, medical personnel, security, and volunteers.
The inaugural WAMSFAT Sports Camp has set a new, high standard. It was more than a clinic; it was the ignition of a lasting flame. The stories of resilience learned, the skills honed, and the friendships forged within the walls of Agrotterra Academy will resonate for years to come.
We are already looking forward to building on this incredible momentum. The future of Nigerian sports is bright, and it starts with initiatives like these.
